During the consultation held on 22 May 2025 in the Republic of Moldova, young people explored both the opportunities and challenges of living near a border, discussed the areas that require stronger cooperation, and proposed creative solutions for improving local life.
Participants identified several opportunities associated with living near a border:
- the possibility to cooperate with more developed countries to advance progress, technology, and national development;
- direct communication and cultural exchange with people from other regions;
- cross-border cooperation, social and economic aid, and a stronger pathway toward European integration.
However, they also acknowledged disadvantages, noting that proximity to a less developed or conflict-affected country can pose serious threats to citizens and infrastructure.
When reflecting on the areas where cooperation is most needed, young people mentioned schools and volunteer organizations—spaces where communication between individuals happens daily and where collaboration is key to building a common understanding within the community. They cited Cycle Region as an example of a useful Interreg project, given the heavy traffic in their area.
As main obstacles to cooperation, participants pointed to intentional alienation based on religion, ethnicity, or race, as well as political conflicts and wars, which deepen divisions and hinder progress.
Their “dream project,” titled “Revitalizing the Public Transport System,” aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transportation in the city through concrete measures such as:
- installing smart traffic lights that adapt to real-time traffic flow,
- creating dedicated trolleybus lanes,
- raising fines for violations of public transport rules, and
- introducing modern, eco-friendly trolleybus models to make urban mobility more efficient and sustainable.
