On 13 May 2025, young people in Romania shared their views on the advantages and challenges of living near a border, discussing everyday realities, cooperation needs, and imaginative ideas for the future.
Several participants viewed life near a border as an opportunity, noting that goods can be transported more easilyand are sometimes cheaper in neighboring countries. They appreciated the convenience of faster border crossings for shopping, work, or travel and said that border life helps people understand cultural and lifestyle differences between countries. For many, living near a border broadens horizons, offering access to opportunities from both sides while remaining close to home.
Others, however, pointed out disadvantages such as heavy traffic, price differences, slow customs procedures, and even risks of smuggling or illegal trade. Some mentioned that variations in laws and regulations can complicate everyday life in border regions.
When asked about areas where cooperation is most needed, participants emphasized improving infrastructure, particularly paving roads in both towns and villages. They also highlighted the importance of safe playgrounds for children, better schools and hospitals, and public spaces where people can gather for events, such as parks or community venues. Environmental protection, waste management, public transport development, and job creation for young people were also seen as key priorities requiring local and cross-border collaboration.
During the discussion on dream projects, the answers reflected both creativity and ambition. Some participants imagined collaborating with global celebrities — launching a fragrance line with Rihanna, helping Justin Bieber with his music career, or doing makeup with Kylie Jenner. Others focused on improving their local environment, proposing to expand and promote the “Beach Please” festival or to work with agronomy experts to develop local agriculture. A few envisioned partnerships between professionals and local authorities to modernize infrastructure and improve community spaces.
